The main objective of this renovation was to refresh the bookshop (Brussels, Belgium) without alienating him from the regular customers. Making the space lighter, more functional and less cluttered without affecting the cozy atmosphere. The transformation is reflected by small changes like removing one wall, adding a mezzanine between the ground floor and first floor, use of rustic natural wood and forms, integrating intense yellow details.

China is rapidly becoming an international hot spot with a budding middle class yearning for western luxuries and comforts. Beijing kids are treated to this trend of indulgence with Kids Republic, a children’s bookstore that transports its pint-sized customers into a delightful fairytale world full of color and fantasy – complete with massive story telling screens and play areas. It’s heaven for little imaginations in the heart of one of the biggest cities in the world. 36-year-old Japanese architect Keiichiro Sako’s design for children’s bookstore Kid’s Republic gives full play to the innocence, fun and inquisitiveness of the young, conjuring up images of childhood that are sure to enchant anyone walking through the doors. Twelve bands of color weave their way around the activity room to create a rainbow-like décor for a space used for storytelling and anime screenings.

This book store is called Paagman Book Store which is based in The Hague (The Netherlands). As a common book store, the bookshelves are the main important furniture. CUBE Architects has designed the bookshelves for this Paagman Book Store located in the entrance of The Hague’s Central library. This small space between the escalator, the pillars and the glass round facade is framed with the bright house color of Paagman.
Two long-drawn-out bookshelves with an aisle in between it, are curved along the open shape of the facade. There is a good view from the outside square, both customers and the books are visible. Several open spaces which are found between the shelves serves as a comfortable seat to read, to walk through or as a cash register. In this way the custumer is tempted to walk through the books and sit down to look through them.
The dismountable bookshelf system of reversible shelves makes it easy to choose whether to show the books face-to-face or side by side.

The UdK Bookshop (Berlin, Germany) was created in 2009 by a group of architecture, art and graphic design students wanting to provide an interdisciplinary platform for the works of students and professors, which until then had been missing at the yearly open house. During the three day event thousands of visitors have the opportunity to explore the works of students from art and architecture to graphic design and fashion and much more. The Bookshop was conceived with the goal of highlighting works from throughout the university in a central location, while offering a program of events including readings and informal discussions among professors from different faculties. This year saw artists and UdK Professors Olafur Eliasson and Gregor Schneider coming together to talk about “Installations and Their Spaces” and media theorist Siegfried Zielinski with Graphic Designer Günter Karl Bose on “The time of the Book.”
The design of this year’s Bookshop was selected from the entries in a student competition, and was subsequently built by the competition participants.
In the winning design, cardboard was chosen as the main material due to its flexibility, stability, affordability, sense of impermanence, lightness and last but not least, its recyclability.

Stripwinkel Lambiek (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) is a paradise for every comic book aficionado. It's the oldest store of it's kind in Europe, with a 40 year long history. Besides comics they offer merchandise, action figures, tees, vintage toys and accessories.
The first Oh Wow Book Club has opened its doors in a tiny 150 square-foot space in New York’s Greenwich Village (US). The retail space is located below street level in a historic brownstone on Waverly Place. The black-and-white tiled floor and the turquoise walls create a decidedly aquatic mood although the designer, Rafael de Cárdenas, was thinking less of marine habitats and more of a classic pre-war NYC water closet when he themed the space.
